Superfly Review

  • HeyUGuys
Director X’s remake of the 1972 Blaxploitation classic Superfly is a sweary, drug-filled and an all around obnoxious production which has high ambitions of translating a much-loved classic to a more contemporary setting, but which in reality only succeeds in reminding us how much more fun and playful the original production was.

Staring Trevor Jackson as the main protagonist, Superfly looks more like an extended music video than a bona fide feature film, which isn’t too much of a surprise considering that Canadian born Director X cut his teeth as music director for some of the biggest names in Hip Hop, including Drake, Jay Z and Kanye West.

The action takes place in Atlanta where drug gangs have ruled over the city for decades. Enter Youngblood Priest (Jackson), a bequiffed and snappily dressed local Cocaine dealer, who prides himself on having never been to jail or on even being on the authorities’ radar.

Summer Box Office Report Card: Grading Popcorn Season by Studio

  • Variety
The summer doesn’t officially end until Labor Day, but with only a few major releases left on tap, it’s time to take a look at how the major studios fared during popcorn season.

Not that they asked us to, but the numbers crunchers at Variety are here to assess what movies worked and which ones sputtered out in the hopes of helping Hollywood learn from its hits and misses. For the second year in a row, we’re handing out report cards to Disney, Warner Bros., Universal, and the rest of their big studio brethren.

Overall, there’s a lot to celebrate. Box office revenues were up more than 11% over last year, and it’s possible that the industry could hit a new record. That’s a significant improvement over last year, when flops such as “The Mummy” and “Transformers: The Last Knight” inspired bad headlines and a

Review: Superfly updates the classic 70's blaxploitation drug flick but falters in its millennial-made supply and demand

It was inevitable that Director X's overwrought flashy, stylish and glossy remake of the late great Gordon Parks Jr.-directed 1972 blaxploitation classic Superfly would prove to be a super-charged vehicle for today's urbanized audiences desensitized by the glamour and graphic gumption of today's rap/hip-hop hedonistic scene. In fact, Parks's ground-breaking, vintage crime caper throwback would be dismissed as a passe Disney movie compared to Director X's unapologetic, fatally frivolous drug-dealing drama laced with high-octane hedonism and killer tunes to match on the hardcore soundtrack. Back in the day, Parks's shifty showcase was not what one would label subtle or gently suggestive. Nevertheless, the dynamic action-packed ditties of raw black cinema such as Sweet Sweetbadaassss Song and Shaft cleverly set the stage for the aforementioned Superfly and other imitators that followed the path to...
